ABYEI, OCTOBER 2, 2023 (SUDANS POST) – At least 11 people have been killed and 13 others have been wounded after a deadly attack on a local market in the disputed Abyei region, local authorities said on Sunday.
The attack is reported to have been carried out by armed youth from neighboring Warrap state’s Twic County.
In a statement seen by Sudans Post, the Abyei Joint Oversight Committee “strongly” condemned the attack, calling it a “heinous attack on innocent people.”
The statement further sent the committee’s condolences to the families of the victims and wished the wounded a speedy recovery.
The strong-worded statement further called on the UN mission in the disputed region “to adhere and commit themselves to their mandate of protection of civilians under imminent security threat, by applying utmost vigilance in order to prevent such incidences.”
The attack on the Abyei market is the latest in a series of violent incidents in the area.
Last year, dozens of civilians were killed after armed youth from Twic attacked Anet Market with both sides claiming ownership of the area.
Abyei is a disputed territory on the border between Sudan and South Sudan.
The two countries have been unable to agree on the status of the territory, and there have also been numerous clashes between the locals and Arab militiamen in recent years.
The UNISFA has been deployed to Abyei since 2011 to help maintain security and protect civilians. However, the force has been criticized for not doing enough to prevent violence in the region.
