JUBA, SEPTEMBER 9, 2023 (SUDANS POST) – The Vice Chancellor of the University of Juba John Akec has expressed regret over his clash with Governor Joseph Manytuil of Unity State over the dredging of Naam River.
The verbal exchange occurred during the economic conference yesterday in Juba when Manytuil accused Akec of calling the people of Unity State animals over the dredging of the Naam River which commenced earlier this month.
In a statement released on Tuesday, Akec said he regretted that the exchange had gotten out of hand. He said he had no hard feelings against Manytuil or the people of Unity State.
“I would like to express my deepest regret about how a genuine exchange with Governor Manytuil had gone out of control; and led to misunderstanding and unproductive debate among our citizens,” Professor Akec said.
“I want to put the record straight that it is clear that both Governor Manytuil and I are committed to serving our citizens in our different capacities and roles. Mine was disagreement with him and others on finding a more sustainable solution to problems of flooding,” he added.
Akec said he hoped that the matter would be put to rest and that everyone would focus on solving the economic challenges facing South Sudan.
“I want this matter be put to rest and that we should all put our hands together and focus our energies to solve the economic challenges facing our country for which the conference was organized by our government to address,” Akec said.
The economic conference was an attempt to bring together different stakeholders to discuss ways to rebuild the country’s economy.
