TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — Gov. Ron DeSantis ordered that Florida’s flags will fly at full staff on Jan. 21 for President-elect Donald Trump’s inauguration, temporarily reversing his order after Jimmy Carter’s death.
President Joe Biden and DeSantis both ordered that flags were to fly half-staff for 30 days from the day of Carter’s passing, which meant that the flags would be lowered until sunset on Jan. 28.
However, Trump expressed annoyance at that the flags would be lowered on the day of his inauguration, Jan. 20, saying that “nobody wants to see this.”
In response to the president-elect’s complaints, Republican governors like Greg Abbot of Texas and Kay Ivey of Alabama announced Monday they would raise the flags on state buildings for Trump’s inauguration. DeSantis followed suit Tuesday, saying the flags would be lowered “at the Florida Capitol and across all state buildings, installations, and grounds.”
“On this unique occasion, where we simultaneously celebrate the service of an incoming president and commend the service of a former president, our nation’s flag will be prominently displayed at full-staff to honor the tradition of our founding fathers and the sacrifices made by those who have served to ensure the torch of liberty continues to burn strong,” DeSantis said.
The flags will return to half-staff on the following Tuesday, Jan. 21.
