Five people perish after boat capsized in Jur River

Authorities in Warraps’ Gogrial West County have confirmed five people have died after a boat capsized with eleven people aboard on Sunday .

Joseph Mangong who is the Administrator of Kuac South Payam told Eye Radio the incident occurred yesterday at around 5: 00 p.m. at Wath-Adut Chol in Kuac South Payam.

The cause of the accident is unknown. But Mangong believes it could be because of strong water waves.

According to Mangong, after the incident, divers immediately intervened and rescued only six people.

“Yesterday in the afternoon between 4 to 5 o’clock there was an accident that occurred in our place in the river called Jur River.

“There are some people crossing the riverside to their home, but the small local boat capsized in the water, and five people passed away – and are Aliet Mawien Ngong, Akuac Lual Agak, Anger Tong Monydeng, Ajak Madhieu Garang and Bong Arop Adup,” Mangong confirmed.

One of the deceased identified as Aliet Mawien Ngong is the wife of Ex-chief Manyol Mayar Madut.

The man rowing the boat is among those who survived.
