The Western Equatoria State community is in panic after heavy rains pounded the area and swept away the Kuyungu Bridge, cutting off the movement between Yambio and Juba.
As a result, fears have grown that a shortage of commodities could partly hit the state.
Speaking to City Review, County Commissioner of Ibba, Elisama Charles, confirmed the incident and lamented that the movement could be paralysed as Kuyungu Bridge is the only linkage between counties.
“Kuyungu Bridge is the only bridge linking Yambio, Ibba and Maridi to Juba,” he said.
According to Elisama, the size of the stream has widened with flood water, making it difficult for passengers to cross from both sides.
The Acting Director General of the Western Equatoria State Ministry of Transport Roads and Bridges, Eng. Joseph Dabi stated the authority had formed a committee that would head to Yambio on Friday to find out how they could fix the damage.
“Yes, we have seen on social media that Kuyungu Bridge has been washed completely off, and it is about eight metres long. We need to go there with our engineers to see what can be done,” Dabi said.
“I am calling on our partners or well-wishers to support the community”.
He said Western Equatoria State had never experienced such a heavy downpour.
“The cause is all about heavy rain, which we have never witnessed,” he added.
