New Port Richey, Fla. (BLOOM) — In the wake of Hurricane Helene’s devastating impact, Catholic Charities, in collaboration with Our Lady Queen of Peace Catholic Church, has swiftly responded to the growing needs of the community. As the storm’s floodwaters recede, they leave behind homes severely damaged, lives uprooted, and countless families in need of basic necessities and medical care.

Among those affected is Joseph LaGuardia, a local resident who witnessed firsthand the wrath of Helene.

“Hurricane Idalia flooded my floors, but Helene’s waters rose halfway up my walls,” LaGuardia shared while surveying his home.

The extent of the damage is evident, as personal belongings are scattered, and the remnants of water damage stain his walls, a stark reminder of the storm’s intensity. For many, the storm surge and flooding have far surpassed any other recent hurricanes, leaving residents in desperate need of assistance.

To address these needs, Catholic Charities established a distribution center at Our Lady Queen of Peace Catholic Church, located at 5417 High Street, New Port Richey. The relief efforts begin on October 3 and will continue daily from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. through October 17.

Volunteers will distribute essential supplies, including water, meals (MREs), baby food, diapers, hygiene kits, insect repellent, and clean-up kits. However, the help doesn’t stop at material goods.

A mobile medical team from Toledo, Ohio, is on-site, providing critical healthcare services to those unable to access their doctors or who are homebound due to the storm’s aftermath. This team includes four doctors, two nurses, and a pharmacist who will be available through October 6. The relief center also offers a laundry truck and a shower trailer for residents to clean up after days of enduring harsh conditions.

“The need here is overwhelming,” said Maggie Rogers, Executive Director of Catholic Charities, after touring the damage. “But with community support and the resources we’re providing, we hope to help families take the first steps toward recovery.”

For many, this response could be the difference between despair and hope. Flyers are being distributed door-to-door, ensuring that those without internet or social media access are aware of the assistance available. Volunteers will also canvas local retailers to spread awareness.

The compassionate and organized effort aims to make sure that every resident, regardless of their circumstances, receives the help they need. The organization invites community members and those affected to stay updated on further relief efforts by visiting their social media pages or the Catholic Charities website.
