TAMPA, Fla.(WFLA) – In the days after Hurricane Helene, this week’s Run for Fun episode is about running and disasters.

While this storm is the most immediate disaster for many in the Southeast, a disaster can be job loss, the death of someone close to you, or anything that disrupts your life.

Leigh Spann and Coach Maria chat about how to adjust your expectations around these times and not let running be an additional stress factor.

Coach Maria reminds her clients that being consistent provides flexibility. For people who are normally active, taking a full week off from running will not drop fitness levels. Running while stress is high, can spike cortisol, and it takes a bigger toll on your body. By taking a break in stressful times, it can keep those levels in check.

On the other hand, running and exercise may be a way to stay mentally healthy. It can be a time to reconnect with friends, and that can help lower stress. It’s important for each runner to assess how they are feeling and not let running add to a high-stress time in life.
