The Speaker of the Council of States, Deng Akoon, called on government agencies and environmental partners to engage the host communities in conservation because they understand what affects them better.
“We must actively involve local communities in decision-making processes, allowing them to participate in shaping policies that directly affect their lives,” Akoon said during the opening of the three-day high-level meeting on environmental-related issues in the oil-producing areas.
He argued that empowering the communities with knowledge, skills, and resources will enable them to become active partners in environmental conservation and sustainable development.
“It is crucial to recognise the interconnectedness of environmental issues and social well-being. We must prioritise investments in education, healthcare, infrastructure, and other essential services that uplift the quality of life for oil-producing states and communities.”
According to Deng, investing in human capital can create a more resilient society capable of navigating the challenges of a changing world.
The speaker said he believes that environmental protection must be at the forefront of our efforts.
“We must invest in cutting-edge technologies and practices that minimise the ecological footprint of oil production.
“This includes adopting stringent regulations, promoting renewable energy alternatives, and supporting research and development for cleaner and better extraction methods,” he said.
He also stressed the need for transparency saying, transparency and accountability are essential pillars for the effective management of oil revenues.
“We must establish robust governance frameworks that ensure the fair distribution of revenue, prevent corruption, and promote responsible financial management. By doing so, we can build trust among stakeholders and foster an environment conducive to sustainable development,” he said.
