Unity State conducts 10-day eye surgery

The Unity State health ministry kickstarted eyes cataract surgery campaign at the main hospital on Sunday.

The campaign, which is supported by a partnership of the ministry of health and Caritas Centre through the Himalayan cataract project, is targeting 350 patients.

Speaking to The City Review on Monday, Dr. Banen Non, Chief Executive Officer in Unity State’s hospital, said the eyes cataract surgery will run for 10 days and the patients will enjoy free service.

“The eye surgery will continue for 10 days and it is free of charge. If anyone has a relative who is having eye problem, that person can come to the hospital so that his or her eyes could be treated for free without paying anything,” Banen said.

He urged the people of Unity State to utilise the assistance rendered by the Caritas agency before the days elapsed.

“I am asking all the people of unity state, whether you are in the county or payam, please come and take up this opportunity before the 10 days run off. You may not get the same chance if these people go back to Juba,” he said.

Dr. Aringa Stephen, field coordinator of Caritas Center, echoed Banen’s sentiments, calling for Unity State’s residents turn up for the eye surgery so that they can be helped.

“We would like this opportunity to be for the benefit of the communities in the state. People are really suffering in the state and they have to take this opportunity.  I would to request all the people to take this opportunity of eyes surgery,” he stressed.

“The medical team and the eye surgery specialist will be able to advice you incase you do not understand anything and how you behave yourself after surgery. Our team will be able to attend to 60 to 70 blind people per day,” he added.
