TREASURE ISLAND, Fla. (WFLA) — Visitors are asked to stay off Treasure Island as the community recovers from Hurricane Helene.
City officials said the barrier island is open to residents, cleanup crews and contractors, but potential sightseers should stay away.
“While we know many of you are eager to return to our beautiful island and experience the paradise you love, we kindly ask for your patience,” city officials posted to social media.
Officials highlighted that the public beach is closed and littered with debris, dead marine life is creating “an unpleasant smell,” and debris is piled up along the streets.
“We ask you not to visit right now. Coming to sightsee only adds strain to our community as we work tirelessly to clean and rebuild. Clogging our roadways and public spaces will hinder our recovery efforts, making it harder for those who live and work here to get back on their feet,” officials said.
Officials said the road to recovery will be long, but they are “committed to restoring and rebuilding Treasure Island into an even better paradise.”
